Novelette and Novella

Sometimes I have a story in me that is not long enough to be a novel, but it is too long to be short story. That is when I write a novelette or a novella. The word novella is Italian, the feminine form of novello, meaning "new." Not only is it longer than a short story, but it is also more complex. It is usually comprised of approximately 20,000 to 50,000 words. In The New Yorker on October 29, 2012, in a article titled "Some Notes on the Novella," Ian McEwen made the following comment: "To sit with a novella is analogous to watching a play or a longish movie."

The novella's origin dates back to the early Renaissance in Italy and France, and it became legitimate literature in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth centuries. It was originally governed by precepts and rules and was limited to a single event, situation, or conflict. It was usually based on realism and presented a logical ending. In today's literary world, it lacks the subplots found in novels. Its main objective is to center around personal and emotional development of the characters.

Some examples of novellas are: Animal Farm, George Orwell, The Call of the Wild, Jack London, A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens, The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway, and The Time Machine, H.G. Wells.

The novelette is a work of prose fiction, longer than a short story but shorter than a novella. It generally consists of 7500 to 20,000 words. Its origin stems from the novella. At first it was considered to be sentimental and trivial, often regarded as something only women who were unsatisfied with their private lives would care to read. It was expected to present a love triangle and was quite predictable. It ALWAYS had a happy ending so as to restore people's faith in love and to leave readers with a feeling of security in an otherwise rebellious world. Critics used to label the novelette "vulgar" and "primitive." In short, the novelette badly influenced literary style, and in its day, those critiques may have been well founded.

But the novelette has undergone an evolution. It has evolved into a story that contains all of the things found in a novel, only shorter, and its reputation has improved. Today we find it in nearly every genre with exceptional popularity in fantasy (especially dark fantasy), sci-fi, romance, and horror. In fact, it is sometimes referred to a "mini novel." It is perfect for both writers and readers who do not have the luxury of spending the time necessary to complete an entire novel. Society has become more sophisticated, so the old requirements for writing a novelette have gone by the wayside. A happy ending is no longer necessary, and a writer can now decide how to end it, even leading to everyone's deaths!

Writing these "between" stories (referring to the length being between that of short stories and novels) means they no longer contain poor language and no style. They now contain solid construction with valid stories and plots, they now follow the rules of good writing, and they contain a less complex plot that fits the smaller length without forfeiting quality. The main focus is on writing a well-put-together story that readers will love.

Become enchanted with Hidden Earth in this fantasy series starting with The Maycly Trilogy

Hidden Earth Series Volume 1: Maycly the Trilogy Book 1 Two Altered Worlds
Janet Beasley

Maycly is a world everyone longs to experience, but for Iona it has become a fading dream. Her life gets her, and continue her search for her missing family. Abandoning all that is familiar to her, she begins her journey having no idea where she is headed, but the Grand Wizard, SUL, has a plan.
turned topsy-turvy and she finds it’s going to take all she has to hang on. When a mysterious puppy shows up on her doorstep she decides to leave the past behind

Experience the emotions of the trials and triumphs in a world where love is the greatest magic of all.

Hidden Earth Series Volume 1: Maycly the Trilogy Book 2 The Battle of Trust and Treachery
Janet Beasley

Book 2 picks back up on Maycly where you were left off in Book 1, still in the past. Charleo is summoned for the task of a lifetime by the Grand Wizard, SUL. He is not certain he is up for the challenge, but honors SUL, nonetheless.

Requested not to tell his family where he is going, he leaves his wife and boys in secret. Charleo and his two new chukkons companions enter into another land on Maycly: a land most do not know exists. Here is where the warrior training begins. You will become attached to the characters like never before, and experience their love and heartaches as the epic battle unfolds. And not to worry, as time catches up Iona returns to the story near the end of Book 2.

Hidden Earth Series Volume 1: Maycly the Trilogy Book 3 The Queen
Janet Beasley

Book 3 begins with a lighthearted chapter about Iona's childhood. The story then leads you into "real time" Iona’s journey through the darkness begins. It is both exciting and terrifying as she discovers who…or perhaps what…is beneath her bed.
on both earth and Maycly.

Out of the darkness, beauty abounds and Iona discovers her destiny. Though the responsibility of her destiny calls, Iona is still in search of her missing family. Book 3 offers twists and turns, changelings and horrifying beasts, another epic battle, and an ending that will leave you in a quandary, wanting to know what happens next.

Praise for Hidden Earth Series Volume 1: Maycly the Trilogy
5 Star! Readers' Favorite review for Book 1 Two Altered Worlds
I found the book scintillating. Adventure, magic, whimsy, dreams, fantasy, imagination -- it's all there.
Children of the current generation are totally into adventure and fantasy series with the overwhelming popularity of Harry Potter and the like. These are stories that can actually awaken the creativity inside you and dare you to dream and fantasize.

The book is the right combination of fantasy and adventure. Iona is well depicted: her innocence, her adventures, her faith, and tragedies. The language is elegant and excellent. Illustrations always give a new meaning to the characters and these illustrations also give you an idea of how each character looks as well as lending color to the story.

5 Star Readers' Favorite review for Book 2 The Battle of Trust and Treacher
Hidden Earth Series Volume 1 Maycly the Trilogy - Part 2 ~ The Battle of Trust and Treachery, by Janet Beasley, takes off from where the first part ends. The reader is again taken on an adventure trip where the characters go through heartaches, fantasy, whimsy, and everything that appeals to the reader.

I found the second part equally compelling as the first part. The author's imagination is still on a high in this part. There are many amazing creatures, use of elaborate language, and some nice illustrations which leave an impression about the characters in the story. The plot and the story are as good as the first part of the story.

All the creatures in the book are also very whimsical. Both the parts of the story will make a good movie too. What I like about this kind of adventure and fantasy fiction is that it gives room for the reader to think without any barriers. The epic battle is fought in a new way in this story.

Hidden Earth Series Volume 1 Maycly the Trilogy - Part 2 ~ The Battle of Trust and Treachery also speaks about the author's expertise. She is able to write a story with an adventure plot in three parts and still manages to leave the reader asking for more. The book caters to readers of all age groups because it encourages you to dream and let your imagination run wild.

5 Star Readers' Favorite review for Book 3 The Queen
I liked this as much as the previous books. Unlike the other two, this one is less violent and ends on a positive note. The story is also full of fantasy, adventure, whimsy, and bits of terror and violence. The book has many more illustrations compared to the other two parts. The illustrations work in tandem with the characters and lend them more credibility. The illustrator has ably captured the mood of the story and the illustrations complement the book beautifully. The author evokes the creativity inside a child by daring him to dream differently.

The Untold Legend: The Warrior Queen a fantasy novel by Amy I. Long

The Untold Legend: The Warrior Queen written by author Amy I. Long is being released to readers and bookstores today from JLB Creatives Publishing.  In 2013 The Untold Legend: The Warrior Queen won the National Indie Excellence Award.

Amy was inspired by history to create this fantasy/romance. Boadicea (Boudica or Boudicca) was a queen of a Celtic tribe. She led an uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. "I especially like strong, outspoken women of earlier days but little known in modern times. Perhaps that is what sparked my enthusiasm to write about my own queen.”

About The Untold Legend: The Warrior Queen
Voda of Monarch never once believed she would end up as a queen. Now she must choose a husband, but she cannot because her heart belongs to Keldrick, the king of the faraway land, Ameri. A marriage between these two would be unsuitable, almost impossible.

Voda is thrown into a dangerous situation and is rescued by her heart’s desire. But their forbidden passion for each other must be denied. Keldrick promises only one night of passion, then he separates himself from temptation. Voda, being a warrior, faces many battles that only bring her closer to her beloved Keldrick.

How dangerous could a marriage between these two desperate souls be? The two struggle through cruelties and war only to discover that, in the end, love conquers all in this untold legend.

Five Star Reviews for The Untold Legend: The Warrior Queen
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a powerful woman who can lead an army to conquest, but also has a heart for a bit of romance on the side. It's a good read.”

“I enjoyed this romance novel with its descriptive scenes woven with history. The lead character is a strong, outspoken female who lives up to the position she is thrown into. This is a very promising start for this first time published author and I look forward to reading her future endeavors.”

About Amy I. Long
Amy I. Long was raised in Sanford, Florida. She is working toward a bachelor's degree in molecular biology and hopes to apply that knowledge to the field of disease control. She loves watching sci-fi movies, reading historic romance novels, and studying history, medical botany, and astronomy.

World-building ~ Straight from the JLBCP CEO, Fantasy Author Janet Beasley

Hello fans - We hope this post finds you doing well and looking forward to a wonderful weekend ahead!

The Fantasy World of Maycly ~ created by Janet Beasley
copyright 2010
As a fantasy author myself, I must say that world-building has become one of my most treasured tasks throughout the writing process of my fantasy novels.

I'd like to share a few tips on creating a realistic world for your readers to enjoy. When I begin to write my fantasy novels, I begin to create my world. Often times it takes me a few chapters to settle in, and fully begin the task of building my world to the fullest. Below are 10 things from a larger list of tools I use when the time comes to turn my imagination into a realistic, fictional world.

1) What shape is your world? (round, flat, etc.)
2) What kind of climate(s) are found on your world?
3) Is there water, or is your world a dry, baron desert?
4) Are there mountains, valleys, caves, fields, meadows, etc.?
5) What kind of dwellings do your characters live in?
6) What are the modes of transportation?
7) Is there currency of any kind?
8) Are there weapons?
9) Is there a section of your world that is forbidden?
10) Do you magic laws fit your world, or do they need to be adjusted?

These 10 tips should get your creative juices flowing. Once you begin to build your world, you will find many other questions that need answered to certain that your very own masterpiece becomes a fictional reality.

Bonus Tip: 11) HAVE FUN!

See you next time!
~Janet~

Beware the Draugar!

What happens to Vikings when they die? Find out in the Hidden Earth Series, Volume Three Planet Water: Draugar of the Abyss

This volume of the Hidden Earth Series holds true to the excitement and thrills provided for readers of the previous two volumes. In Volume Three, Planet Water: Draugar of the Abyss we take a historic turn in the fantastic world of Maycly and journey with sixteen-year-old Arrowanna as she carves out her destiny with the help of her family, friends, and maybe a new love.

About the Hidden Earth Series, Volume Three, Planet Water: Draugar of the Abyss
What happens to Vikings when they die? Some become the undead known as Draugar.

On her 16th birthday, Arrowanna, one of the gilled people on Planet Water, is summoned by the Grand Wizard, SUL, to be the next Carrier in His plan for a new Earth. Arrowanna, unsuspecting and somewhat rebellious, boards a tall ship (with her twin brothers stowing away as her protectors) and sets out on a quest to find The Element. In a race against time—and the Draugar—she must reach the castle with The Element to keep SUL’s plan from failing.

There is nothing but trouble from the onset as Arrowanna sails above and beneath the waves. This aquatic journey takes her to the Island of Opposites, leads her to fall head-over-heels in love, lands her in the midst of an underwater battle, and even drags her into the icy caves of the abyss. Twists, turns, and Draugar abound in this fast-paced adventure, all while presenting nuggets of Old Norse and Icelandic mythology.

Pressure from her new love’s request and the urgency to find and deliver The Element in time cause Arrowanna to doubt herself. Will the quest be too much for her? Will she cast her destiny to the wind? Set sail with her on this mystical adventure, but…Beware the Draugar!

Maycly The Trilogy, Book Two: The Battle of Trust and Treachery.

Have you been to Maycly yet? Take the enchanted fantastic adventure with the Hidden Earth Series. Maycly the Trilogy: Book One: Two Altered Worlds was recently released for readers of YA fantasy. Now you can own Book Two: The Battle of Trust and Treachery!

About the Hidden Earth Series, Volume One, MAYCLY The Trilogy, Book Two: The Battle of Trust and Treachery
Book Two picks back up on Maycly where you were left off in Book One, still in the past. Charleo is Iona returns to the story near the end of Book Two. You will certainly want to journey on to MAYCLY The Trilogy, Book Three: The Queen to see how this fantastical story comes together.
summoned for the task of a lifetime by the Grand Wizard, SUL. He is not certain he is up to the challenge, but he honors SUL, nonetheless. Requested not to tell his family where he is going, he leaves his wife and boys in secret. Charleo and his two chukkon companions enter another land on Maycly, a land most do not know exists. Here is where the warrior training begins. You will become attached to the characters like never before and experience their love and heartaches as the epic battle unfolds. And not to worry, as time catches up,

The Battle of Trust and Treachery gets Five Stars from Reader's Favorite!

Cover Reveal! Planet Water: Draugar of the Abyss

JLB Creatives Publishing is proud to reveal the cover for the next adventure in the Hidden Earth Series, Planet Water: Draugar of the Abyss by author Janet Beasley. Coming in early 2015!

About Planet Water: Draugar of the Abyss
In Volume three of the Hidden Earth Series Arrowanna is summoned by SUL on her 16th birthday to become The Carrier of Planet Water’s element. She boards an enchanted tall ship and her journey begins. The quest takes her above and beneath the waves, sails her to places such as the Island of Opposites, lands her in the midst of an underwater battle, and even leads her into the icy caves of the abyss. She finds love, but the pressure of her new love’s request causes her to doubt her ability of ever becoming The Carrier she knows she must be.

A few of your favorites from Maycly, including Iona, join in the action with Arrowanna and her friends. Twists, turns and danger abound in this fast-paced adventure that is delicately woven with hints of Old Norse and Icelandic Mythology.

Will the quest be too much for Arrowanna? Will she cast her destiny to the wind for the sake of love? Set sail with her on this mystical adventure, but… Beware the Draugar!
