WEDNESDAY FEATURE "Spark Your Creativity"

#Kite #Kites #Caribbean #Water #Beach
This week's photo takes us to Disney's Castaway Cay
Janet has titled this photo, "A Splash of Color"

Cool Fact: This photo was selected by CBS Money Talk to use in one of their articles.

Happy Creating!

On Wednesdays we're posting a photo taken by our CEO, author Janet Beasley to help inspire authors, painters, musicians, and other awesome artists. We've titled the new feature, "Spark Your Creativity." How did we come up with this? Read on...

When Janet isn't hard at work in the literary world, you'll find her and her husband kayaking the crystal clear, spring fed rivers of Florida. Janet's second passion next to writing is photographing nature as they glide through the serene settings these rivers have to offer. She and her husband also enjoy traveling the US, so you'll also be seeing some of Janet's
photos taken from hikes and journeys she and her husband have done nationwide. She has used her photos time and again for her own inspiration when it comes to many of her stories, and decided she would like to share the same inspiration with the literary and arts world.

And not to worry if you're not inspired this week, come back each Wednesday to catch a glimpse of what could "spark" your next amazing piece of work. And if you don't want to wait until next Wednesday, we'd like to invite you to visit our JLB Creatives Photo Gallery on Flickr where the photos are always free to download and use as book covers, business cards, wallpaper, etc. All we ask is that you give credit where credit is due - perhaps by something as simple as adding a credit link to the JLB Creatives/Janet Beasley Flickr site in your book or on your presentation.

We hope you enjoy our new Wednesday feature, "Spark Your Creativity." And we want to let you know, if a photo inspires you to write a story that you would like to have considered for publication by JLB Creatives Publishing, be sure to visit our website at http://www.JLBCreatives.com where you'll find our company's history, be introduced to the publishing team, discover our Submission Guidelines, and may submit your work for consideration.

Enjoy!

5 ways to boost your word count without cheating

It's the 3rd day of Camp NaNoWriMo! This is a NaNo light so you get to choose your own word count starting at 10, 000 words. But let's use the daily word count  for a 50k novel. Writers need 1,667 words to reach that goal by day 30 (31 in July yay we get an extra day!) That doesn't seem like an unreasonable amount of words to write in an entire day. (Are they crazy? )  But there are days that life will interfere with our lofty noveling goals and we're lucky to get 2 words on paper. Try one of these word pumpers when your fingers start to slow.

1. Sprinting
Meet up with other Wrimos in person or online and see who can write the most words in a set amount of time. Most sprints are 10-20 minutes long. This is great for a tweet-up. You'll be amazed at how many words you can get down with a couple hours of sprinting. Not to mention the fun!

2. Long Lost Friend /Relative
If you feel your scene is dragging or you just can't get those words out. Try having your character run into an old friend or relative while their out and about. Or even a phone call from them. You can add tons of words as they reminisce about old times or that Thanksgiving when Aunt Mable's cat ate the stuffing. Even if it's something you may edit out in the next draft it will breath some new life into your muse and pad that count!

3. Disaster Strikes
A hurricane heading in, a freak F5 tornado, earthquake, flood, a 3-10 car pile up. Any one of those can add at least a couple of pages worth of wordiness. You have the before, during, and effects after that might even bring out some qualities you didn't know your characters had.

4. Kill'em
Let's face it. Death is wordy. Not matter how or who gets bumped off you've get at least 4 scenes off a corpse turning up. The death itself, the discovery, the aftermath, and the funeral, lots and lots of words.

5. Use Your Senses
You have 5 senses taste, touch, scent, sight, sound. Every single environment your characters walk into, or crash into in some cases, holds each of these elements just waiting for you to detail them. A car crash could have the scent of smoke and gasoline in the air. They would see broken glass, dented and crushed cars, hear someone crying for help or a sirens approaching, maybe a car horn. Taste blood from a gash, or if gas is thick in the air it will leave a taste on your tongue. They may feel the ache of injury or the rough edges or the broken plastic of the dash. Talk about filling the pages, just let your nose guide you... literally.

Okay, there you have it 5 ways to get wordy and pad that word count. Now, stop reading this blog and get back to your novel! :)

Protective Measures author Jessica Arman in the spotlight

YWW writer Jessica Arman is in our Monday Spotlight this week. Jessica lives on a farm in small town Michigan. She grew up working outside and caring for animals. At present she is a student at Lake Superior University with a major in Fisheries and Wildlife Management. She hopes to attend Colorado Mountain College and work toward becoming a veterinary technician.

Every other Thursday Jessica attends the Pickford Community Library’s Young Writers Workshop to enhance her writing skills. She has been writing short stories her whole life, basing them on a bent reality of everyday events.

As Jessica grew so did her writing, the stories became more realistic. She writes to do the things that will never happen.

Jessica has a short story Terror Bond published in the 2012-2013 Pickford Young Writers Anthology of Short Stories and Poetry. She published her first sci-fi thriller Protective Measures with JLB Creatives Publishing in May of 2014.

Jessica’s dream is to open an animal rehabilitation center, but for now she will continue to write her many other lives.

Download Jessica Arman’s novella Protective Measures and the Pickford Young Writers Anthologies on Smashwords FREE today!

About Protective Measures:
Imagine being stuck in school forever. Living there, working there, and eating every meal there. That’s what Taryn and every other kid from her town has to do. What they don’t know is that this so-called slave school is run by Taryn’s father. This secret will lead to heartbreak and despair. Freedom will be had, but not without a heavy cost.

Excerpt:
Before she even reached the classroom, she knew something was wrong. The hallway was too empty and too quiet. She walked into the room to find most of the teachers present, and at the very back stood the master, Alloy. He was short and heavyset. His black suit fit like a second skin. He had bleached blond, slicked-back hair, and his face was always tight and emotionless. Taryn knew this could not end well. She put on her best “I don’t care” face and stood in front of the assembly.
“Do you know why you’re here, Ms. Bicks?” Alloy asked.
“I left class without being dismissed. Since when is that something you get involved in?”
“That is one reason you are here, but there are many more. I have been keeping my eye on you and have found that you are a leader for some of these students—too much of a leader. They seem to think that when you are around they can get away with more. Not to mention your constant misbehavior anyway. We are going to put a stop to that.” Alloy said. He grabbed the intercom mic and made the announcement, “All students must now report to the auditorium. Please sit in your rank order, with the highest in the front.” He clicked off the intercom and faced Taryn again.

“Now, Taryn if you would follow me to the auditorium, we can get this over with and put you back in your place.” Alloy's face sported a devilish grin.
