In celebration of YouthTube, many of us have chipped in and are bringing you child related stories. You’ll find Janet Beasley’s story below

Kids CAN Make a Difference
(The child's name is fictitious, but the story remains a true event.)

Being an author means so much more than just putting words on a page and publishing your books. As an author, I was recently enlightened in a very special way. My novel, Hidden Earth, Volume 1, MAYCLY, Parts 1, 2, and 3, was released in February, 2012. I took pre-release-date orders for the 744-page collector’s edition paperback. Sales went well, and I could not have been happier, or so I thought. I hadn’t really considered what my fans were doing with the autographed copies they received in mid March. Much to my surprise, a rare opportunity to find out presented itself.

It was a normal day in my small town. I headed over to the local diner to have lunch and catch up on the latest news. I grabbed the last remaining seat and joined the already established conversation. A lady who had ordered a pre-release-date copy of MAYCLY was sitting with her friend at one of the other five tables in the restaurant. She waved.

I smiled and said, “How ya doin’?”

She replied with a big grin, “I’m doin’ great, but Johnny’s doin’ better!”

With a polite smile I nodded, all the while wondering who Johnny was. “That’s great!”

There wasn’t much of a pause before she continued. “I gave my copy of MAYCLY to Johnny, my grandson. He loves your book. He’s already halfway through it. He just turned eleven.” She beamed. “AND that was the book he chose to take on vacation with him this week to the nation’s capital. It fit right in his back pack, and he made a point of letting me know he’d be reading it on the plane.”

The only thing I could recall ever hearing about her grandson was that he had read the complete Harry Potter series. Not only that, but he knew everything about every character, place, and animal. As this fact crept its way to the forefront of my memory, my heart skipped a beat. I’m up against Rowling, and this kid’s enjoying my book? The woman continued to tell me that he already knew my characters up to the point he had reached in the story—how old they were, what they wore, how their voices sounded, and so on.

Opting out of a “deer in the headlights” stare, I squealed like a teenager, “That’s amazing!”

Before I could utter another word, the woman said, “Yeah. He came to me and said, ‘Grandma, this book should be on the AR (Accelerated Reading) list.’” She paused and smiled back at what I’m certain was an excited yet puzzled look on my face, then continued. “I’m not sure how you get your books on that list, but I’ll do some research for you.”

“OK.” What else could I say? Finally I closed my gaping mouth and asked, “Do you suppose Johnny would want to write a review for me? I’ll be happy to put it on my website and post it along with the novel where it’s for sale online. I promise only to mention that he’s an 11-year-old from the US.”

She glowed like any proud grandmother would. “I’ll surely ask him.”

In a few days I received an email stating that Johnny would be honored to do the review; he’d never been asked by a real author to do something like that and was thrilled.

This kid has totally stolen my heart, and I’ve never even met him. The numerous hours I spent searching for the right words, constructing sentences, creating a new world, and developing a new language over the last eight years, along with establishing my own style and suffering through sleepless nights as ideas invaded my brain, were well worth the effort.

For several days I forgot about the nerve-wracking moment when I realized that, for this kid at least, I was up against Rowling’s series. I forgot about all the hard work facing me in writing the next five novels in my series and trying to get MAYCLY onto the AR list. All I could think about was...if nothing else happens with this novel series, who cares? It has made a child smile. Speaking from firsthand experience, that’s the greatest success any author could ask for. It is truly an unforgettable moment in my career.

This story and others will be appearing in the next Plum Tree Anthology

Ebooks or Hard Copies?

TOPIC POST:
So - are you typing the word "SMILE" or are you gonna "ROCK-ON" with the hard copies? I'll be you'll bet surprised to find out which I like best...BOTH! Here's why.

Ebooks have become a part of my regular day now. Personally I love them! Especially those that include their illustrations and other fun things. I like the way I can have my entire "current" library on hand without the bulkiness of numerous paperbacks and hard cover novels. I'm usually reading 3-4 books at a time, so you can see where the convenience comes in for someone like me.

My first e-reader was a gift from my wonderful husband at Christmas time. He was smart enough to know how much I enjoyed being online, surfing, catching up on network sites, posting news on the blog, etc. With all of that in mind, he chose an inexpensive e-reader for me that was also wifi and internet compatible. He said he started small to see if it was something I'd use. Long story short - it's only been 3 months and with the use I've put on it, I'm already set on moving up to something that moves faster with the page turns, holds more apps, connects faster, etc.

But does this mean I'm ready to completely burn my hard copy books? Not by any means! And there's some books I still enjoy holding in my hands as a tangible item, not a digital one. For instance..."coffee table" books filled with beautiful photos and illustrations are some I will always buy in hard copy. Yes, I love having the digital illustrations in the novels, but I also L-O-V-E having my gorgeous photo/illustration books that accompany so many successful novels.

Good news...my novel "Maycly" will be no different! There will be ebooks of the novel itself complete with illustrations, but there will also be hard copy "coffee table" style books available for purchase containing Dar Bagby's illustrations, in depth descriptions, and more.

By being a member on this blog, you'll be among the first to know when both the ebook version AND the hard copy illustration books hit the market. If you haven't become a "Follower" as of yet, I encourage you to do, simply by clicking the "FOLLOW" button at the top of the blog page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at jlbcreatives@gmail.com

It takes time for a rose to come into full bloom,
but they're always worth the wait.
Your talents and dreams are no different.

LINK OF THE WEEK:
Since we're looking at a rose, do you know how many different types of roses there are? I had no idea until I began to research the information. And you know what I found out? WOW! There's a lot out there!

There are plenty of flowers on "Maycly" but none as beautiful as a rose. My favorite color rose is a purple rose - just like Iona's. (Who's Iona, you ask? In time, it will be revealed who Iona is as we get closer to the debut of my novel. So stay tuned to the JLB Creatives Blog so you don't miss her introduction.) I carried purple roses at my wedding (30 years ago this July) and they have remained on my all time favorites list of flowers, right under the Bird of Paradise - proper name: Strelitzia, and Plumerias - to me, the best smelling flowers around. (see BONUS LINKS for additional flowers!)

I stumbled across the LINK OF THE WEEK while doing some research, and thought you might find it interesting...with it being Spring time and all.

I by no means endorse this site. I don't receive any compensation for numbers of clicks, etc. I strictly found a cool site I wanted to share with my JLB Creative bloggers if they're interested in learning about roses.

And here's a couple of BONUS LINKS for you to enjoy as well.
Again - I do not endorse them nor make anything by you clicking on them.
They're strictly there for you to enjoy and learn...yeah, really! :)

And if you're interested in taking a look at my "best of the best" flower photos, you may do so by visiting

SUMMARY:
Well, that about wraps it up for WEEK 5. Remember, The Comment Game: Type the word "SMILE" if you're into ebooks, or type "ROCK ON" if you're into hard copies. If you're into both - be sure to "SMILE" as you "ROCK ON!" Let me know why you chose the one you did!

Also, if you haven't had a chance to do so, be sure and "LIKE" us on FB to stay in tune even more with Janet and her creativity. Simply click and Like: JLB Creatives on Facebook

WEEK 7 VIDEO
"Go Team!"

Being part of a team is a wonderful experience. But sports aren't the only thing that involve team efforts. Family's, for instance, can be one of the best team events, ever! Whether you have a huge family where you can't hardly keep up with the names of all the new ones coming into the world, or it's just you and a few, or even just you and your family consisting of your friends, a family is a team, and each team member can truly inspire everyone on their team.

That's what this week's blog is all about...being a team, encouraging each another to keep going and never give up! My sister and I have found that working together as a team, my novel Maycly will be a much better novel than if I tried to do it all by myself. Ideas, concepts, and more fly over the phone lines daily between the two of us as we near completion of the novel.

Below is the video of "The Sister Team." Simply click on the photo or link below to head on over to YouTube to check it out. The link is "unlisted" until next week so my bloggers get first shot at checking it out...but PLEASE feel free to share the link with your friends and family. It will go "public" next week.

=BONUS VIDEO=

I invite you to "subscribe" to my YouTube Channel, JLBCreatives, while you're there! Just click the subscribe button at the top of the YouTube page where you'll be viewing the video.

Remember, the video is "unlisted" on YouTube right now, so my bloggers can have first glance, then it will go public next week for the masses. Please, however, feel free to "share" the link once your there.

WEEK 7
Pic n' Thought
by Janet
Are you living it up to forget...or forgetting to live it up?

LINK OF THE WEEK:
How many of you like to get-away and enjoy a little peace and quiet sometimes? I think that probably includes most all of us. Don and I are no different.

When we want to catch a quick weekend away, we've found a wonderful little place nestled in the wonderful town of Matlacha, FL. It's called Bayview Bed & Breakfast.

Bill and Diane, the inn keepers, are just the most pleasant people to stay with. The rooms in the bed and breakfast are always super clean and spacious. The views are amazing, and the breakfasts are out of this world. If you love to canoe, kayak, or fish there's no better place. Ospreys, manatees, and rays are usually abundant depending on the time of the year.

We've stayed at the Bayview several times and the only thing we dislike about it, is the day we have to leave!

By no means are we endorsing this place, nor do we get money for clicks or visits to their site. It's just strictly a cool little place we've found on the "edge of the world" that anyone who enjoys the south western sunsets over the gulf will come to love, and we wanted to share our little secret with you.

WEEK 7 SUMMARY:
This week it's been all about teams. Remember, type the words "Go Team!" if you're a sports spectator and tell us what your fav sport to watch would be. And for those of you who actually play sports, type the words "I'm With The Team!" and let us know what your fav to play is.

You can now follow tweets on Twitter with JLB Creatives, "LIKE" us on Facebook, get LinkedIn with us, and subscribe to our YouTube Channel: JLBCreatives, to keep up with all of the JLB Creatives latest happenings.

Be sure and share us with all your friends and family!

Thanks again for all your support and shared enthusiasm!

See you awesome peeps next week!

WEEK 6 Video
Action, Fairytale Romance, or Discovering New Lands & Life
What's your fav?

WEEK 6 TOPIC POST:
When it comes to epic fantasy, I'm guessing most of you loyal fans would "WINK", "MMMMWWWAAAHH!," AND "GASP" because most epic fantasy novels, like "Maycly" where Good vs. Evil in a good old fashioned way, contain a bit of all three.

I definitely would "WINK" this week because I enjoy action a whole big bunch. It makes for fun fast paced stories that can keep you on the edge of your seat. When it came time to create action for my novel "Maycly" I found it was a fun task trying to make it exciting using only the resources I allowed on Maycly. For instance, there are no electric or gas machines (cars, planes, etc.) so I had to bring the action about in the chase scene using horses and other creatures unique unto Maycly.

And being the sappy chick that I am I would have to include "The Kissing Sound...MMMWWWAAHH!" I couldn't resist the temptation to add in some fairytale romance. The light-hearted romances in the novel bring the reader different ages to relate to. For example there's a couple in their early 20's, one in their 40's, as well as a few couples who have reached the ripe old age of 317 years old! And by that...you should know the romance isn't always about human relationships.

But, if I truly had to pick just one, I'd have to "GASP"...becuase my absolute fav would fall under Discovering New Lands & Life. Being a highly creative individual, it is really fun for me to face the challenge of world development for my novels. Not only do I get to "create" the terrain, but also those who dwell thereon, their dwellings, the transportation, the plant life, the animals, the birds, the fish...you see where I'm going with this.

If you are a highly creative individual, but haven't ever really given any thought to writing a novel, that's OK. But let me give you a helpful hint...from one creative nut to another: Whatever comes to you in a creative way, jot it down in a small notebook that you keep with you. Why? Because if the day ever does come that you would like to dive head first into the arena of fantasy or sci-fi novel writing - you'll have a great head start!

Even if you never want to become a novelist, with having those creative ideas on paper it's fun to go back and re-read your moments-of-genius throughout your life - kind of like a creativity journal.

Your creativity journal is also a wonderful resource to have on hand for those of you interested in the theatrical realm. Remember, special effects technicians can be some of your best friends when it comes to developing a realistic presentation on the stage or film.

I like to put it this way..."I'm just the inspiration behind the persperation!" In other words...I think so far out of the box, I can't even find the box anymore! But - I'm not a "nuts and bolts" type person who can draft and engineer things. So please don't feel left out if you don't think your creative...we creative geniuses need genius people like you to bring our wacky ideas to life! A prime example of this would be me and my husband...me=creative genius, my husband=engineering guru chocked full of physics and design knowledge. ;-)

WEEK 6
Pic N' Thought
by Janet
We often say, "spare me the details."
Aren't you glad Mother Nature
didn't listen to any of us on that one?

~     ~     ~

LINK OF THE WEEK:
On Maycly there is one entire section of land devoted to growing crops. From fruits and berries to vegetables and grains. There's also a gristmill to grind the grains into flour.

One of the things I enjoyed most as a kid was going to the local gristmill and watching the huge waterwheel turn without stopping. The sound of the water dropping in and out of each small trough was mesmerising to me. I'd stand as close as I could, throwing my imagination into high gear and become a water fairy who could ride the big gristmill wheel. "Weeeeee!"

Then we'd go inside the mill, and there'd be the huge "gear-like" mechanism spinning with each notch in all of the ginormous wheels perfeclty meshing together with every turn. This part was usually pretty intimidating to me as a kid, so I'd pretend that the creepy "gear room" was an evil place where monsters hid and made the giant wooden wheels spin by blowing their fiery breath on hot coals that were hidden somewhere deep within. Then I'd pretend that as the fairy, I would have to leave the water and fly in secret to warn our ruler that evil was crafting a mennacing machine to destroy the land! "YIKES!"

Well, needless to say, I've added on a few years to my life since those thoughts raced through my head. Now when I visit a gristmill I find it very fascinating as to how it operates. I was so amazed to find out that the scary "gear room" wasn't scary at all. It was actually a much needed part in turning the grains into flours.

My favorite gristmill would have to be from my homeland. If you're from there, you already know which one I mean. Clifton Mill was such a huge 'impact-making' part of my childhood, I wanted to share it with you this week. You can simply click on my photo or the text below it and you'll go "back in time" and discover the nostalgia of one of my favorite childhood memories.

I by know means endorse Clifton Mill, nor do I get paid 'per click' or any other way if you visit the site. It's just simply a fun place I wanted to share with you, my trusty blog followers.

~     ~     ~

WEEK 6 SUMMARY:
This week has been fun! From being creative to writing romance action, and discovery scenes, to stepping back in time and visiting a grist mill. There's always something fun to do if you just take the time to do a little research before you set out on an adventure...sometimes the best things are found right in your own home town!

The Comment Game is a good one this week - and I need your help to find out what my readers want most. Here's the recap: Type the word "WINK" if you love Action. Type the word "MMMWWWAAAHHH!" if fairytale romance is your thing. And thirdly, type the word "GASP" if you are an explorer and love to discover new lands and what all they have to offer. Again, you can type them all or make up your own...just be sure and fill me in!

To share the JLB Creatives Blog with your friends and family I've made it even easier...you can scroll back up to the top of the post and look for the title: "Be Kind and Share" on the right of the page. Pick one or more and click to deliver the JLB Creative news to your own fan base!

That's it for WEEK 6 - can't wait to see you next week when we'll be sharing with you, the long and enduring process of writing and illustrating as a "Sister Team" while living over 1500 miles apart!

If you haven't become a true follower yet, I would like to personally invite you to become one, so you can be among those who get my novel news...hot off the press! :)

Thanks for stopping by!
See you next week...

Welcome back all you trusty followers, and a very special "Welcome" to those of you who have just discovered JLB Creatives blog.
New weekly posts from me happen early on Mondays - or if you prefer to look at it this way...very late on Sunday nights at 12:01 midnight.

This week we're going to discuss illustrations in epic fantasy novels.

WEEK 4 VIDEO

WEEK 4 TOPIC POST:
When it comes to fantasy stories, illustrations are a huge part. Being that many of the characters, creatures, and places have never been seen before, illustrations help bring the story to life for the reader.

Color illustrations are my favorite...for the most part. But when I look at black and white pictures they sometimes give me a sense of slipping back in time, and I kind of like that.

Being that my novel, "Maycly," will be published as an ebook first - there are probably going to be some E-readers that don't produce color pictures as of yet. I will be submitting the illustrations in color - but be aware, you may see them in black and white. The illustrations will be smaller for the ebook.

But good news! We have plans for publishing a hard copy book of the illustrations in a much larger size - complete with names, titles, and descriptions. It will also include musical scores and original family trees.

My sister, Dar Bagby, is my illustrator. We have a ton of fun working together on my novel "Maycly."

It's amazing how much depth good illustrations can add to a story, and help me - the author - write a much better fantasy novel.

I'm certain you'll enjoy meeting Dar and discovering her exceptional talent as an artist.

     BONUS!
By viewing this week's bonus video - "Meet The Illustrator" - you'll be among the first to see the debut of some of the characters, dwellings, animals, and plant life on "Maycly" even before we publish the novel.

PLEASE feel free to share the link with your friends and family. (I just wanted my dedicated fans to have the honor of getting the first glimpse of some of Maycly's coolest characters, creatures, and more - all drawn by Dar - before the video is made available to the general public!)

WEEK 4
Pic n' Thought
by Janet
~Be patient and wait. For there is always a ray of hope
that will eventually pierce the darkness.~

LINK OF THE WEEK:
There are times when we wish we would have snapped a shot or a quick video of an event that we some how missed. Then there are times we snap the shot or quick video and wish we would have taken the time to get it right. Both are frustrating...believe me, as a scenic nature photographer, I feel your pain!
One of things I do is carry my camera with me at all times - with a spare battery! I can't tell you the countless times we've been driving down the road and I blurt out, "STOP THE CAR!" or "PULL OVER - NOW! - please?" because there's a perfect photo op right then - and most likely it will be gone when we drive back past the area.
With digital photography, depending on the size of your media card, you can take tons of the same photo, increasing your chances of getting that one really great shot out of hundreds.
Sunsets change quickly - so don't waste time trying to decide if it's worth the shot or not. If you've got a digital camera, you're out nothing but a few moments time. If the sunset photos end up being "yucky" in your opinion, there's always the delete feature. :)
Photographing wildlife is a different...animal (see what I did there?)...all together. To capture that "great" wildlife shot it takes patience, patience, and more patience. The truly awesome photos of wildlife are usually results of hours, days, weeks, or even months of waiting for the "critter" to appear. If you're lucky enough to see a "critter" while hiking, or on your drive, treat it like a sunset. Stop whatever you're doing and immediately begin to shoot because the photo is going to change quickly! Remember to keep quiet when photographing wildlife. It's really easy to shout out, "LOOK AT THAT!" or "NO WAY! IT'S A BEAR!" from being so excited. (I'm only speaking from personal experience.)
Regardless, we all have photos we like to share. So, this week's link will take you to a site where you can easily store, share, and create fun things with your photos. The basic membership to use the site is FREE. I by no means endorse the site, and I don't get commissions for clicks, registrations, etc. I simply use the site for my photos and have become fond of its easy-to-use uploading feature, simple categorizing in folders, sharing with friends and family, and more.

And since we're discussing photos, I would like to personally invite you to take a look at my Photo Gallery. You may do so by simply following the link below.

WEEK 4 SUMMARY:
This week's Comment Game has to do with illustrations in fantasy novels. So here we go...if you like illustrations within your fantasy novel I need you to type the word "SHOUT," or "WOOHOO" if you'd rather, in the comment box at the bottom of this post. Then tell me why you like them there - where you like them to appear (top, bottom, middle of the page, etc.). By doing this, you'll be helping me when it comes publishing time as to where the majority of you prefer to see the illustrations.

To post a comment, look at the bottom of this post and you'll see a number with the word comments beside it. Click on the word comments - and type away! If you need more info on leaving comments, go back to WEEK 2's post and you'll find some there.
