Friday Prompt: Story Starter

Happy All Hallow's Eve! Halloween is a favorite holiday, the ghost stories, the costumes, the candy! Let's celebrate this night before the ghosts come out by telling a scary story. It doesn't have to be completely scary. Horror is an awesome genre that can be completely frightening or mixed with comedy, action, mystery or even romance.

Begin your story with the story starter below and write at least 1000 words to tell your tale.

Tap. Tap. Tap. The sound came from inside the closet. Quietly, I crept toward the door ...

Happy scribbles and Happy Halloween!

Stop by JLBCreatives.com for great reads for all ages or to submit your completed manuscript for possible publication!

Friday Prompt: Character Study

This week let's think about characters. A great way to come up with character ideas is to Google images of people. You can choose to search for Steampunk Men or Femme Fatals or just a general search for random images. Portraits can tell you the story of that person if you take a few minutes to really look at it and listen to what they have to tell you. Here are a couple of "characters" to practice with or maybe they'll be in your next story. NaNoWriMo is coming up!

Take a look at each one. What do they do for a living? Where are they from? What music do they have on their iPod or in their record collection? Are they married or are they a player? Ask more questions and design the perfect character for your story.

Wesley Out West earns 5 stars from Readers' Favorite

Author Rhonda Walker's newest children's book, Wesley Out West has been awarded five stars from Readers' Favorite Reviews. Here is what they had to say...

Reviewed By Mamta Madhavan for Readers’ Favorite
"The story is exciting with a lot of bright and colorful illustrations. They make the characters come alive and they give good pace and movement to the story and scenes. It's a good bedtime storybook for children, and parents and grandparents can use it for their kids and grandkids. It's also good for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Wesley the Walrus is adorable and it's nice to read about him trying to make his boring life more interesting.

The facts about marine animals given at the end of the book are informative and educational and give children more knowledge about these sea creatures. The author does a good job of introducing children to marine animals in a fun way, making it easy for them to understand. It's a good book for teachers and parents to teach children about marine life."

About Wesley Out West
Young Wesley Walrus leaves his ice home to travel on an adventure to Big West, where the town's citizens desperately need help. Arriving to cheers he quickly runs into Old Walter the Whale. Colorful illustrations and action take readers to an Old west town where the citizens expect Wesley to save them. Can he?

Five-star reader reviews are already coming in from readers and their parents. Don’t just take our word for it…

“I read the book to my son and great niece. They loved the book… the book teaches about finding adventure and fun in the little things, which happen daily…”

“A delightful book. I shared this story with my seven-year-old son, who enjoyed it immensely. It appealed to his own wild imagination and sense of adventure.”

“This is a story that helps you to find excitement in the little, everyday experiences we have. I do believe it encouraged my son to be a bit more creative, to think in a different way, use his imagination and always do what is right. No matter the cost.”

Author, Rhonda Walker has created lively characters that can spark creativity and teach important character values.

About the Author
Every day is icing on the cake of my life. It is challenging, fantastic, miracle filled, and troubled -- sometimes
all at once. There are memories of the blessings of family and friends, successes and failure. I live daily in grateful awareness for a God who provides abundant blessings, especially during times of embarrassing failures.

I discovered my passion for reading early in life (right after the ark anchored on a mountain top.) In 1979, when my daughters were young, I returned to college. There, English and Education professors taught me some needed writing basics and opened the door to children’s thinking. In truth, though, I began writing for myself in 1975, and my style was already developed. God blessed me with a passion for reading, the love of writing, and whatever ability I possess.

With training, skills, and God’s help, I fulfilled a long-held dream of writing stories for young readers. Several years ago, two of my grammar stories were published in a Scott Foresman textbook for first graders, and plans are underway to put those stories and others into a grammar series book. I write stories to encourage enjoyment and learning through reading.

The Beasley's...Makers of Opulent Steampunk

One fine day steampunk enthusiast Don said to his steampunk enthusiast wife Janet, "Check this out...I think we can be makers. Whatta ya think?"

Janet turned to see the pic Don had up on his screen and instantly said, "WOW. Now that's what I call cool. I think we can do that. Heck, we can surely try, and at the very least we will fail. But we always learn from our failures, right?"

Don shrugged his shoulders and said, "Right."

Janet leaped from her chair. "So let's go for it!" And so they did.

The rest is history. This upstanding couple has worked diligently birthing a passion neither knew they possessed. That passion being the love of creating steampunk, diesel punk, and cyberpunk art. Hence the name of their art line, BeaslePunk.

Since the birth of their passion in this field as makers.artists in December of 2014 they have designed and created punk style vintage hats, masks, and over 50 spectacular cosplay guns and have at least that many waiting in the wings to be invented. In fact, they decided that when they appear at events they would call their exhibit booth The BeaslePunk Cosplay Armory.

Their uncanny, professional knack at making these #MadMax style opulent guns has led to getting their work into places such as Tijuana Flats Tex Mex Restaurant, and the Cackling Hen's Cafe`. For more photos of their "making talent" visit the BeaslePunk Galleries.

They are getting excited (and confess that their entire house looks like a prop barn at the moment) about exhibiting at the Steampunk & Industrial Show coming October 17-18, 2015 at Renninger's Market located on 441 in Mount Dora, Florida.

Janet and Don are keep a secret from everyone, but they filled us in, and let us tell you...you're not going to want to miss what they will have on display in addition to their artwork that will be for sale. We were able to talk them into letting you catch a sneak peek of part of the surprise. Trust us, we've seen the whole thing, and one can only imagine what the rest of this display piece is going to look like!

Don & Janet (and Oswald) hope to see you at the show! Look for them in booth #220! HINT: You can't miss them :)

Submissions Are Open for Specific Genres!

Hello fans of the literary world! Welcome to the JLB Creatives Publishing blog. Today we've got something special for aspiring authors seeking a publisher.

Let's face it, readers need authors, and authors need readers. It's one of the best combinations on the planet! Fact: readers want to read sweet, professional works, and serious authors don't want to put out sour, unprofessional material. That's where having a publisher comes in.

We wanted to let worthy authors out there know that submissions are now open through October 31, 2015 for consideration of specific genres. We continually accept submissions, however at this time manuscripts falling under the specified following genres will have top priority for consideration of publication.

Historical Fiction (era, event, or person)
American Westerns (cowboys, railroad, pioneers)
Clean Romance (fantasy, teen, paranormal)
Mystery (Steampunk, crime, drama, thriller.)
Science Fiction (aliens, outer space, other world)

It takes hard work, passion, and severe dedication to the craft of writing to be accepted by a true publisher. JLB Creatives Publishing makes certain the stories they select for publication will present readers with quality stories that are professionally edited (in-house) and will also have book covers and interiors that have been designed professionally (in-house), both performed while working one-on-one with each author. These are only two of the main features in which JLB Creatives Publishing takes pride. Our one-on-one customer service/communication throughout the entire publication process (before, during, and after) with our team of industry professionals, and the fact that we promote our selected authors on our main social media outlets set us apart. If selected for publication you will have both an eBook and a print book (in most cases), and both will be made available globally.

You'll find we are a true, credible publisher who sincerely cares about the authors we select for publication.

If you have a completed manuscript we invite you to visit our website at www.JLBCreatives.com and take a look at our Submission Guidelines page first. If after reading our guidelines you feel that you and your story are a good fit for our publishing company, move on over to the Submission Form page and follow the instructions.

Submission Guidelines

Submission Form

will be up for consideration first.

We DO NOT accept or consider manuscripts that are obscene or slanderous.

We look forward to seeing your submissions.
